NYFW 101: How to get ready for a fashion show in under a minute. #MNYfw #hyperlapse
My favorite makeup trend-setter this far in 2012 has got to be Adele! Her Grammy-winning garnet grin inspired a number of our favorite leading ladies to follow suit on the Oscar red carpet just a few weeks later and now I’m seeing red lips everywhere I turn!
Choosing the right color depends on two things, the undertone of your skin and the level of “WOW” you’re looking for. Reds come in three undertones; orange/brown, blue/pink and “true” red. If your complexion is golden or olive, the orange-red or brick-red hues will look the best. Blue-red and pink-red are better for those of us with neutral to pink undertones. Everyone can wear a “true” red. (A quick test for finding your undertone is to look at the color of the veins in the bend of your elbow. Blue-ish veins mean the undertone of your skin is neutral/pink. If your veins show a greener tone, you have more golden or olive undertones.) Now, on to the “WOW”! Lipstick and gloss come in a number of textures and coverages. If you’re going for Adele’s classic look, you’ll want a full-color, matte lipstick. For lips more like Angelina’s, a satin finish lipstick is best. (Tip: Put a clear gloss on top of any lipstick for fuller looking lips.)
Is a hit of red what you seek? Try to find something similar to Scarlett’s high-shine, glitter-studded gloss.
When trying to find this new red of yours, one of the best ways to narrow down what you DO like is to find out what you don’t. Try on EVERYTHING…including a red that doesn’t match your undertone. (If you don’t have time to test some new looks, ask for a clean tester and rub a bit of the color on the end of your fingertip…the color there is more similar to your lips than the back of your hand.) Also, go somewhere you can try on different shades. Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom or any other makeup counter or salon will staff knowledgeable makeup artists who understand your undertone and want to help. If you do decide to hit the drugstore, take note of their return policy. You shouldn’t have to keep a color you don’t like just because you couldn’t try before you buy.
Remember, makeup is about feeling pretty and confident. Heed the advice of experts but always keep in mind what makes you happy!
XOXO
